Tenerife is unlike any other place in Europe!

With its location just off the coast of West Africa, the island has a unique array of flora and fauna, areas of great ecological significance, and a culture that has grown almost paradoxically as a part of, and apart from, Europe.

The Guanches, Tenerife’s indigenous people, have a heritage that has integrated with Spanish culture, while at the same time allowing for many traditions to be passed down through the generations.

For those seeking to immerse themselves in the local culture then try and time your trip to coincide with the Santa Cruz de Tenerife Carnival.

Here you’ll witness many of the existing traditions of Guanche culture being acted out!

The incredible Cuevas Negras (Black Caves) are also worth exploring for their fascinating history as the Guanches have inhabited the caves at various points in the island’s history.

And don’t miss the magnificent MUNA (Museum of Nature and Archaeology) in Santa Cruz.

In the past, Tenerife was synonymous with the ills of over-tourism (even though this was confined mainly to a relatively small part of the island), but in recent years Tenerife has become a hotbed for ecotourism.

With the island’s stunning geography and unique flora and fauna, it’s easy to see why.

While not all of the things to do in Tenerife listed in this article are eco-friendly (go-karting for example!), you’ll find most of the items detailed are sustainable activities.

Mount Teide trips, the Cave of the Winds, Barranco del Infierno, and the Masca Valley hike are among the many examples of eco-friendly activities in Tenerife that you can indulge in and not be left with a guilty conscience.

The thing to note about Tenerife is the diversity of options on the island.

From exploring the beautiful historic towns of La Orotava, Garachico, and Icod de Los Vino to all the magnificent things to do in Santa Cruz, the cultural capital.

You definitely won’t be short of places to visit in Tenerife.

Whether you want to indulge in all the great activities in Tenerife, have a hedonistic vacation partying the nights away, or soak in the island’s rich culture, there is a lot on offer for you.

Tenerife is also a fantastic option for those on a budget as despite being part of Spain, the island enjoys VAT-free status, making it a very reasonable destination to visit.

You’ll be able to ponder on that one while having a cheap cocktail on one of the many fine beaches in Tenerife!
